You travel with the so-called draisine (small railway vehicles that move with muscle strength) on the tracks of the Gailtalbahn ("Railway of the Gail valley"), which is over 100 years old and always slightly downhill from the station of Kötschach-Mauthen till the end in Rattendorf - Jenig, in total 21 kilometers. The journey brings you through the beautiful landscape of the Gailtal slow-food region and invites you to explore this land. You have the choice to stop at different points of the route and explore the neighboring area and the villages in a pleasant way, or to be pampered with culinary delights in one of the typical inns.

Speed and finish don't matter in this journey: on the chosen day, you have time from 9:00 to 17:00 to start and cover the 21 kilometers. The minimum duration of the trip (excluding stops) is approximately 2:30 hours. The return from Jenig to Kötschach-Mauthen comes easily with bus, which connects the upper Gailtal with the S-Bahn in Hermagor every hour. For our passengers we have been able to offer a special fare and for holiday makers with a guest card (+Card holiday or GästeCard Basic) or for the Klimaticket owners (a sustainability ticket sold in Austria) the return journey is even free.

The Gailtalbahn association (in German Verein Gailtalbahn) was founded in 2016 by young and enterprising railway fans, after the bewildering decision of the politicians to shut down the service along the Gailtal railway between Hermagor and Kötschach-Mauthen, after more than 101 years of activity. This led to the establishment of the Gailtalbahn Betriebs GmbH enterprise and the beginn of the "Gailtal-Draisine" tourism project. This prevented a dismantling of the infrastructure. All incomes go 100% to the maintenance of the railway and vehicles. With your experience on the Gailtal draisine you will actively support our heart project and bring a breath of fresh air on the old tracks.

We thank you warmly and look forward to having you visit!
